(Other people I don't "get" include larpers, people who write/read fan fiction, anyone who backs into a parking spot [no, I don't need you to explain to me why--I know why you do it, I just think it's stupid], and vegans.)
What's not to love about an animal that loves you unconditionally, and is excited out of their minds every time they see you? And they can be trained to be well behaved and follow rules with less effort than it takes to make your spouse understand the importance of putting away food after they're done with it?
Last November, my husband and I adopted a German Shepherd mix from our local SPCA. By our best calculations, today she turns one year old. Life is full of decisions that can go both ways--good and bad--and this was definitely one of the good ones. Other than her penchant for chewing on shoes, she's basically the best dog in the world. She's never growled in annoyance at us, she's protective but very sociable, and the cutest thing on four legs.
I'm writing this post for no other reason than I wanted to, and because I love talking about our wonderful mutt, Mindy. (Full name Mindy Beyonce Pad Thai Olsen.) If you've ever thought about adopting a dog, and you have the time and money to do so, go this weekend to your local shelter or SPCA.
